Cancer Patients

Dear Cancer patient,

I am sorry you are not currently well. By following these simple guidelines I will help you and your oral health to get through this difficult period in your life.

Before your treatment

  1. Make sure you have a full dental checkup and a thorough clean before you start your treatment. With radiotherapy to the face and neck, this will be slightly more involved.

  2. Diet and Nutrition is very important. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables

  3. Get enough sleep

  4. Buy all your dental products in advance as they might not always be available

  5. Mix a bottle of salt and bicarbonate of soda with water and keep it in the fridge

During treatment

  1. Keep note of what you need to do, you might get a bit forgetful

  2. Clean your teeth properly before your treatment. You will not be in the mood when you get back and you may be tired / sleep excessively afterwards

  3. I know you will to take food supplements which can be quite sugary. Make sure you rinse with water straight after

  4. Your mouth will get ulcerated. This is painful. Keep rinsing with the salt/bicarbonate mix (see above) and suck on ice cubes to make this less uncomfortable

  5. Use baby teething gel (Dentinox) on the ulvcertaed areas for immediate relief - you have to eat

  6. If you vomit, remember to only rinse with water and not to brush immediately.

  7. Your mouth will be dry - stay away from sugar as this will only make it worse and can cause rapid decay. Only use the products that I recommend

  8. Keep your lips moisturised

  9. If you are prone to Cold Sores be especially careful and keep the topical acyclovir close to hand

  10. If you are able to - see your hygienist every 3 months. See could make you some therapeutic trays that can help protect your teeth

After Treatment

  1. Have another full dental checkup and see everything is OK

  2. Stick to a strict dental hygiene routine

  3. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions - happy to help
